Tuesday, April 14th, 2026: 2nd Annual Grief Fire on the 10-year anniversary of the Toxic Drug Crisis, starting at 12pm at the Outdoor Auditorium (RBC Plaza) outside of Building 200, VIU Nanaimo Campus.

April 14th, 2026 will mark the 10-year anniversary since the Toxic Drug Crisis was declared a Public Health Emergency in British Columbia. Over 18,239 people in BC have died from toxic drug poisoning in this decade, with over 607 lives lost here in Nanaimo, while many others experience long-term health complications. The impacts of this worsening crisis has touched every member of our community.

The VIU Harm Reduction Alliance invites you to join us in a Grief Fire ceremony to honour those who have lost their lives due to the Toxic Drug Crisis, hold each other in grief and loss, and support as well as be supported by our community. This event is an adaption of Snuneymuxw spiritual tradition, made available for all to attend.

Participants are encouraged to write and release messages to lost loved ones. There will be an opportunity to share, if you wish, but there is no pressure to do so.

Everyone is welcome. Refreshments and battery powered tea lights will be provided. See the attached poster for details and campus map for parking and location details.
